In chapter 19 Jonas is with the Giver and tells him about the releasing of one of the twins. He is curious about the ceremony. But the Giver seems a bit sad with this announcement. He asks Jonas if he wants to see what had happened during the ceremony and Jonas accepts.
At first he can see his father who chooses one of the two children, the heavier, the other would be release. He takes a syringe with a liquid, then injected the baby in the forehead. The child stopped moving and Jonas understood that his father has just killed him.
After that, the Giver told him that Rosemary has done it by herself and it prouves that she was brave.
Jonas is choked and feels inside himself a lot of pain which makes him cry.
